Stripping Down Musical Theatre: The Nudity Practices of Yesterday and Tomorrow

This thesis is a historical analysis of the techniques and protocols used to portray intimacy and, more specifically, nudity in rehearsal and performance. The research includes excerpts from personal interviews with noteworthy actors and stage managers including Shelley Plimpton, William Parry, Richard Rauscher, T.J. Kearney, etc. It utilizes original and revival productions of monumental musicals such as Hair, Passion, and Spring Awakening as case studies. Likewise, it advocates for the implementation of intimacy directors for future works to ensure the safety and productivity of all artists involved.
